Japanese Language Course

Contents of the Course


The course aims to provide sufficient knowledge of Japanese for entering Sojo University or other universities and graduate schools in Japan, as well as to contribute to internationalism.

Entry and Period of Study

There are two entry dates each year, in April and October. One year is required to complete the course. However, the course may be extended for about one year. In that case, a tuition fee appropriate to the period of extension is required.


Except for summer (August), winter ( End of December to Early January) and spring vacations (Early February to Early April) , Saturday, Sunday and National Holidays, classes will be held every morning from Monday through Friday (8:50 - 10:20, 10:30 - 12:00 and13:00 - 14:30).
Students will be placed in one of three or four classes depending on ability. The following subjects are planned but further subjects may be added or combined as deemed necessary:
General Japanese, Pronunciation, Conversation, Listening, Composition, Ideographs, Vocabulary, Reading, Grammar, Current Affairs in Japan, Mathematics( Only for those wishing to enroll.)

Requirements for Completion of the Program

More than three-quarters (75%) attendance rate and a passing mark of 60% in each of the examination subjects to be held at the end of the course will be required. However, class participation and short tests may also be used as evaluation criteria.

Application Requirements

In principle, the course is established for students, who upon completion of the course, have the intention of proceeding to a university or graduate school in Japan and fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Possess the necessary academic qualification for entering a university abroad
  2. Possess the necessary academic qualification for entering a university in Japan
  3. Those considered particularly eligible for admission by Sojo University

Application Procedures

The following application forms must be submitted in Japanese, English, Chinese or Korean. Original transcripts in other languages must be accompanied by a 2 translation in one of these four languages.

  1. Application form (Photograph Attached)
  2. A copy of Graduation Certificate of last school attended (excluding Japanese Language School) or a Certificate of Expected Graduation. If the applicant is still a student, a document issued by the institution enrolled at is needed. In the case of a Chinese applicant, a Notarization Form (gong-zheng-shu) is also required. Furthermore, an applicant who has submitted a certificate of being a student or due to graduate must submit a copy of certificate of graduation soon after having graduated.
  3. Transcripts of grades issued by the last school attended (excluding Japanese Language School). If still a student, send the most recent obtainable grade transcript. In the case of a Chinese applicant, a Notarization Form is also required. Also applicants who have completed their academic studies at a normal high school in China, have to submit a copy of the official transcript for "High Final Examination Results" (hui-kao).
  4. Copy of Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Above 4th Level) or Certification of 150 hours of Japanese Language Study.
  5. Certification of financial solvency for the tuition fee and livelihood expenses. Also a record of the defrayer’s of expenses (either the applicant’s or family’s) income for the previous year.
  6. Five photographs (4cm × 3cm)
    These photographs should be taken within the previous six months and clear.
    Write the name of the applicant on the back of the photographs. Stick one piece in them on the entrance application form.

Application Periods

April admission October I - November 15 (Sat. & Sun. excluded) of the previous year.
October admission April 6 - May 15 (Sat. & Sun. excluded) of the current year.

The application fee is to be paid into the stated bank account. A representative of the applicant may make a payment directly at Sojo University.

Selection Methods

Selection is made mainly based on the documents submitted by the applicant and through an interview by telephone.

Notification of Results

April admission Mid -December of the previous year.
October admission Mid -June of the current year.

Those accepted for enrolment must, within one week of receiving notification of having passed, pay the initial admittance fee into the bank account as indicated.
A representative of the applicant may make a payment directly at Sojo University. After receiving this payment, Sojo University will then issue a Certificate of Admission.

Application for a "Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence" and Registration at Sojo University

Sojo University shall make the application for "Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence" on behalf of the applicant. The results will be conveyed to April prospective applicants by the end of February and to October applicants by the end of August. Within one week of receiving notice of certification, the applicant must remit the tuition fee and the amount for livelihood expenses to the indicated bank account (cf. p.6). A representative of the applicant may make a payment directly at Sojo University. When Sojo University has confirmed that payment has been made, it will send the applicant the "Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence."
The deposited amount (living expenditure allotment) will be handed over to the student in 12 installments, beginning from the month of starting to live in Japan through the month prior to the completion of the course. Any remaining amount will be paid into the student’s bank account later than the month the course is completed. The bank transfer expenses will be borne by the student. Also, that all utilities such as water and electricity costs have been fully paid is a condition for settling of accounts.
On receiving the "Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence," the applicant should bring it to the local Japanese Embassy or Consulate and apply for a visa. After being granted a visa, the applicant should follow the procedures, which will be described in the material in the accompanying envelope for entering Japan. After arriving in Japan, the applicant should proceed to Sojo University and complete the required registration procedures for admission.
If for some reason the applicant is not granted a visa to enter Japan, Sojo University will return the deposited tuition fee and livelihood expenditure deposit. However, any expenses accruing through this transaction will be deducted there from the remaining amount.penditure deposit. Use of facilities

The school facilities such as libraries and computers can be used as well as the undergraduate student etc. It is possible to participate also in the club activity.


It is possible to apply at the following though there is no one of our school.

  1. Study encouragement expense for foreign student at private expense

    It is one person in 20~30 people.

Part-time job

It is necessary to receive "Permission of the activity outside the qualification" in Immigration Bureau (Kumamoto liaison office) though it is possible to work part-time within the range where there is no obstacle in study.

  1. The working hour is within 28 hours on the week.
    (Within eight hours a day in case of long leave)
  2. The one to contravene a law is prohibited. It is not possible to work even at the bar snack and the pachinko parlor, etc.

Medical insurance (All members should join)

  1. National health insurance (Country)
    You should follow a procedure with alien registration in the city office.
  2. Students from abroad medical treatment expense assistance system
    (Japan Student Services Organization・Free of charge) You should affix the receipt to the university after treatment is received in the hospital and follow a procedure. In addition, about the injury in the class and in extracurricular activities at the university
  3. Personal accident insurance for students pursuing education and research (Japan Student Services Organization・The installment of insurance is paid by Sojo Univ.) is also applied. So the load becomes lighter.

Student discount

The student discount is applied to the international students as well as Japanese students. So you can use transportation system,movie theater etc. by cheaper charge.


Apartment house

The room charge of many Japanese student is usual 30,000~40,000 yen level.
But the room charge of the apartments Sojo-univ specificates and many international students are borrowing is about 25,000 yen level.
Besides, the electricity charge and the gas charge (5,000 yen on the average), etc.
for each one has used are necessary.
When moving,the mediation fee (remuneration 20,000 yen to the real estate agent) and the rent of one month(when moving during the month, daily payment) and the indoor repair expense (50,000 yen) at evacuating and the fire insurance premium (7,000 yen a year)are necessary.
Each one should prepare bedding. Offer to the university when you want to ask for arrangements of the room and bedding before the visit to Japan.

Meeting when entering a country

We are not doing. Ask the acquaintance in Japan or come by yourself according to the material to visit to Japan. However, inform the university (Japanese Language course) as early as possible when the date of the visit to Japan is decided.
